Food and Beverage

Most eateries in Elgin (Grabouw) pride themselves on farm fresh, locally produced ingredients. Expect practically every dining option from the oldest deli-style farm stall in the Western Cape to award-winning restaurants on wine estates. As for the wines, Elgin grapes take longer to ripen on the vine and are celebrated for their perfectly balanced ripe flavours.

Elgin Valley Vineyards

When Ian and Anette Corder bought this beautiful apple farm in 2003, they had one goal in mind. To grow and produce a Sauvignon Blanc wine that could be ranked amongst the best in the world. The conditions were perfect. The farm was situated on the Elgin Valley plateau which is a good 300 metres above sea level, a stones throw away from the sea with a cool climate which is ideal for the slow ripening of Sauvignon Blanc grapes. And the soils, being weathered Bokkeveld Shale or Glenrosa, buffer the vines against heat and drought stress and keep the ground loose for a healthy root growth. So it was, in 2004, that the transformation began into what it is today. A spectacular, new world wine farm which utilizes the most modern viticultural practices and wine making techniques to make one of the Elgin Valley’s finest wines.

Highlands Road Wine Estate

Built in 2006, the tasting room combines stylish modern décor with the timelessness of the wine cellar. Aromas drift in through a window peering into the barrel cellar as you sit and relax with a glass of wine. Catherine Marshall Wines

Catherine Marshall Wines is the first eponymous wine label for wines made by a women winemaker in South Africa.

The origin of the new company is firmly entrenched in the Barefoot Wine Company (BWC) that was born out of a fun-filled Friday night foot crush and beach party in Muizenberg in 1996. Since then, the three-barrel event has grown into a well-established independent producer of premium wines.

All Catherine Marshall Wines are produced from grapes selected by Catherine with the cooperation of our supporting growers. Over the years, we have been fortunate to procure superior Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah grapes from sites best suited to each variety.

Highlands Road Wine Estate

Built in 2006, the tasting room combines stylish modern décor with the timelessness of the wine cellar. Aromas drift in through a window peering into the barrel cellar as you sit and relax with a glass of wine. In the winter, sink into the couch in front of the large stone fireplace and in the summer, sit at the open windows with the sun and the breeze gliding in from the dam. If you’re lucky, you might even get one of us to do a tasting in our Highlands Road Estate kilts. As we figure, we are the only winery in the world to have our own registered tartan, and we take pride in infusing every tasting with the unique character of our estate.

Our tasting room is also available as an intimate and tranquil venue for events such as meetings or banquets.

Iona Vineyards

The wines of Iona come from a dramatically unique site in the Cape Winelands. The vineyards are on a mountain plateau 420 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

In a country where cool sites are precious, these vineyards are like gold – the grapes ripening up to two months later than other Cape vineyards and in perfect balance. Iona is South Africa's coolest vineyard site.

Oak Valley Wines

Oak Valley, a relatively new entrant in the South African wine industry, has made great strides in the market since the launch of the first wine in 2003, a much-acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc. The Oak Valley range of wines includes Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay, a Semillon/Sauvignon blend, a Pinot Noir and a Bordeaux styled blend, known as The Oak Valley Blend.

The wines are products of the exciting new cool climate Elgin Ward, which is rapidly attracting the attention and investment from a number of leading South African winemakers.

The flavours of the wines are characterised by minerally undertones complimented by fresh acidity, giving an elegance that has its origins in the cool terroir of the valley

Paul Wallace Wines

Acclaimed Western Cape Viticulturist, Paul Wallace, is now bottling his passion. Together with his wife Nicky they purchased their 25 hectare farm in September 2003 and immediately set out to create their own little piece of heaven. Paul is a viticultural consultant and here at last he could practise what he has advised and encouraged other farmers to do in their vineyards. No visit to Elgin would be complete without sharing a little bit of the famous Wallace hospitality and sampling their wines. Paul and Nicky can be found behind their tasting counter on Saturdays or by appointment on week days. On a Saturday you will also find a pot of soup bubbling on the stove in winter and a tapas offering during the summer months.

Ross Gower Wines

Ross Gower spent 2000 pinpoiting the "ideal spot to buy a retirement farm"

He and wife Sally found it on an apple spread in the south-east corner of Elgin.

Retiring? Hardly. Establishing Klein Constantia´s winery (`home´ for 19 years) honed his hands-on skills: throwing concrete for his new cellar (assisted by his sons), installing equipment himself, including the cooling; surviving an exploding press, sourcing sauvignon for his maiden 2004 vintage; and planting 5ha of his own.

Biodynamic practices are partly inspired by the proximity of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.

For he who knew at 13 that he wanted to be a winemaker, farming `our heavenly little patch of earth holds great joys´

Ross Gower Wines is located on an apple spread in the South East corner of Elgin. It has a "mud cellar" and is run by the family.

In 2004 Ross Gower Wines has his maiden Vintage, and planted 5 hectares of his own.

WINTERS DRIFT is the wine brand of Molteno Brothers (Pty) Ltd, a farming business situated in the Elgin area of the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

Historically Molteno Brothers has been a fruit farm and apples and pears continue to comprise the largest part of the farm at approximately 420 hectares.

Molteno Brothers, as owners of about 500 hectares of uncultivated mountain veld, are founder members of the Groenberg Conservancy formed in 1998.
