Food and Beverage

The Bot Rivier Winegrowers Association is representative of the warm, earthy, sociable character of the farmers in the area. Chat to any of the local winemakers and they’ll probably tell you that this is where “real people make real wine”. Superbly handcrafted wines are made from the oldest vines in the region as well as the latest pioneering varietals from new plantings.

As for the food, expect everything from homegrown hospitality on a stoep (verandah) to soul food restaurant cuisine. Nothing gathers a happy crowd quite like the delicious aroma of a spit braai (gradually rotating barbecue roast).

Gabriëlskloof

Gabriëlskloof Restaurant, the unspoilt culinary hotspot on the ‘koppie’ outside Bot River, coaxes a slow exhale with the release of their new Winter Menu, which pays homage to real Overberg tastes with a pinch of nostalgia.

Gorgeously appointed at Gabriëlskloof Estate, an award-winning wine, olive and lavender farm, this stylish yet relaxed destination restaurant lures travellers along the N2 with unhurried lunch indulgences of hearty fare that embraces the true essence of the region.

“Whether you are swinging by for a wine tasting, to buy farm honey on tap from our Deli, to have lunch served up with chocolate box views, or are planning to tie the knot, Gabriëlskloof has it all. At the restaurant we pride ourselves in honest country food, made with the best seasonal produce sourced from the farm, local artisans and friendly neighbours,” shares Executive Chef and passionate locavore, Frans Groenewald.

Wine plays such a big part in Gabriëlskloof’s daily existence therefore I work very closely with our winemaker, Peter-Allan Finlayson, to offer the perfect wine recommendation for each dish. Guests are welcome to have an impromptu tasting at the comfort of their own table and we offer the entire Grabriëlskloof range by the glass. We also have a smattering of wines from fellow Bot River producers on our wine list,” explains Frans.

Both the restaurant’s A la Carte Menu and the Deli Menu change on a regular basis depending on the chef’s inspiration, the weather and their homemade pantry supplies. A two course A La Carte meal costs R165 per person and a three course indulgence R195 per person.

Gabriëlskloof Restaurant is open daily for breakfast and lunch, except on Tuesdays and bookings are essential. Rivendell

When Heimo and Maria Thalhammer first arrived in the Botriver Valley they fell in love with the area.

Situated on the Whale Route near Botrivier, at one with nature and its surrounds, Rivendell, like its wine, epitomises harmony and tranquility, coupled with vibrancy and a spirit of adventure, whilst retaining a classic elegance. Rivendell harvested their first grapes in 2011, signaling the estate's maiden vintage release with the superb Sauvignon Blanc. The eagerly anticipated Rivendell Shiraz will be introduced to the market in March 2013.

Rivendell believes in producing wines of the finest quality. Only small volumes are bottled in quantities that will not overflow the market. Special attention is given to every vine planted to ensure that the wines are crafted to perfection.

The Bistro's vibrant executive chef captures the diversity of the Overberg by providing fabulous Mediterranean-style food from fresh local produce that will please the most decadent palate. She also considers the more delicate tastes of Rivendell's younger clientele by offering some healthy options for toddler taste-buds.

Wildekrans Wine Estate - Botrivier

Wildekrans Estate is a boutique winery situated near Bot River in the Southern Cape. Its wines, which are an expression of the unique cool climate terrior, originate in vineyards that are located on rolling hills overlooking Walker Bay.

The wine making philosophy is one that begins from the premise that great wines begin in the vineyard. Consequently, care is taken to carefully match varietals to suitable soil types. The vines are thereafter nurtured to produce low yielding crops of pronounced structure & fruit intensity.
The wine making process, similarly, adheres to principles of low intervention with a focus on capturing & retaining the essence of the vine & it’s terrior.
